The apple is a pomaceous fruit and belongs to the Rosaceae family. The apple tree (Malus domestica) is a deciduous tree in the rose family which is cultivated worldwide as a fruit tree. Originated in Central Asia, apples have been cultivated for centuries in Asia and Europe.  Many ancient cultures’ histories  including that of the Greeks, Romans, and Europeans signified the importance of this fruit.

As per reports of the year 2013,  80 million apples were cultivated worldwide with China producing half of the total alone. The United States is the second largest producer of apples. Other countries include India, Italy, and Poland.

In a study to measure the concentration of antioxidants in various fruits, apples were found to be the second highest. Antioxidants help to prevent oxidation damage that takes place during cell activity. Its consumption is also linked to the decreased risk of chronic and coronary heart disease. With no fat or cholesterol, low calories, high fiber and Vitamin C, it becomes the healthiest and a must have fruit in our diet.

1. Reduces cholesterol:

Apples are a rich source of soluble fiber. This fiber helps to reduce LDL “bad” cholesterol level and increases HDL “good” cholesterol in the blood. A recent study revealed that women who ate one apple every day for six weeks experienced about 4 percent increase in their good cholesterol and about 23 percent decrease in their bad cholesterol.

2. Protects against cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes:

Apples contain antioxidant polyphenols such as flavonoids. The antioxidant properties of these flavonoids help to reduce the risk of various diseases ranging from cancers to diabetes. The natural fiber found in apples help to lower the risk of lung, colon cancer.

3. Bone health:

Most women experience thinning of bones (osteoporosis) post menopause. Antioxidants like flavonoids in apples help to strengthen the bone density.
